Toyota FJ Cruiser Air Suspension

When it comes to modding vehicles, Toyota is no stranger to providing a great platform for enthusiasts to expand upon. While most are going to choose Tacomas, FRS, Supras, and more sporty vehicles, there is a niche following for the Toyota FJ Cruiser. While wheels and lift kits are popular on the FJ, many enthusiasts are switching over to air suspension for versatility with their suspension. Today, we are going to look at everything you need for a Toyota FJ Cruiser air suspension system.

Does the Toyota FJ Cruiser Have Air Suspension?

The Toyota FJ Cruiser did not come with air suspension from the factory, but there are many different aftermarket kits to add to your vehicle. The factory suspension on an FJ includes struts, shocks, and coil springs for a durable ride that is perfect for daily driving and occasional off-road activities.

What Do I Need To Add Air Suspension To My Toyota FJ Cruiser?

When adding air suspension to your FJ, you can take two different routes: build your own kit or purchase an all-in-one kit. While you may be tempted to purchase a complete air suspension kit, you will not get the opportunity to put together the best of the best components. Let’s take a look at everything you will need to build a Toyota FJ Cruiser air suspension system.

Air Compressor

Taking a look at the air suspension system from the front to the back, we will be starting with the air compressor. The air compressor, or compressors if you choose to go with dual compressors, take outside air and compress it to be used in your air suspension kit. We at AccuAir only offer the best in air suspension compressors: VIAIR.

Air Tank

From the air compressor, your compressed air will travel to the air tank where it will be stored until you need to use it. An air suspension air tank will be offered in various different options including a 3-gallon or 5-gallon capacity. We recommend checking out our ENDO line of tanks for the highest-quality air suspension air tanks available.

Air Lines

Air lines are what connect each of your air suspension components together to carry air throughout the system. These lines are made of high-quality ABS to withstand the elements if routed outside of the vehicle. Air lines are found in ¼” and ⅜” sizes to cater to the specific performance of your air suspension system. We recommend ordering our 50ft air suspension air line kit to give you enough line to do even the largest systems.

Valve Manifold

The valve manifold on an air suspension system controls when and where your air is released to the air bags. A valve manifold is made up of electronic valves and is installed between your air tank and air struts. These valves open up to let air flow to each strut once you push a button or flip a switch. You can find valve manifolds in 2-corner and 4-corner configurations, depending on the setup.

Air Suspension Management System

No good air suspension system is complete without a management system. AccuAir is the leading innovator and manufacturer of air suspension management systems. The air suspension management system is going to control your entire kit to allow you to raise and lower your vehicle. While you can go old school and install switches, there are plenty of opportunities to take your system to the next level for quicker and easier adjustments. AccuAir is a leading manufacturer of air suspension management systems and offers kits that allow for wireless, Bluetooth, and preset adjustability at the push of a button.

Air Struts

In order to add air suspension to your FJ Cruiser, you are going to need to replace your factory shocks, struts, and springs with air struts. Air struts are similar to your factory setup, but instead of springs, they will feature air bags. Air bags are air-filled rubber bladders that inflate with air to raise the vehicle and deflate to lower the vehicle.

Water Traps/Filters

Since air suspension systems utilize compressed air, moisture can build in your system, causing rust in your tank and damage to other components. In order to keep excessive moisture out of your air suspension system, you can install a water trap or water filter. These filters trap the moisture and allow you to empty it out when you maintain your system.

Ride Height Sensors

Although optional, ride height sensors are a great addition to any air suspension system. These sensors monitor where your vehicle’s suspension is and allow you to pre-program your favorite ride heights to allow you to get to them at the push of a button. This enables you to not have to pulse your system to get it to your favorite height.
